Artificial Intelligence is being embraced by teachers across the state

Victorian teachers are keen to embrace Artificial Intelligence (AI) in their classrooms, with a strong interest being shown to incorporate the new technology in an educational context.

While AI might present some initial challenges, the development of a national framework for AI use in schools, and the Department of Education’s Generative Artificial Intelligence Policy, has provided teachers with a best practice guide for its use in a classroom setting and gives teachers the freedom to explore opportunities for enhancing the development of differentiated learning.

It also supports educators to understand the implications of AI, and how it can be used safely in schools to create engaging and meaningful learning experiences.

In a recent Artificial Intelligence in Education workshop held at the regional Academy Centre in Bairnsdale, participants were able to deepen their understanding of AI. They came with varied knowledge and experience, with one explaining, ‘I began at the absolute baseline of knowledge and will leave the day with a greater understanding of generative AI. I have so much to learn but really appreciated the extra support provided by Rachel and Lorena, the facilitators.'

Another participant reflected on the program structure, 'Great content. Great variety of tasks for various levels of GEN AI experiences. All participants had differentiated learning tasks at their level. Great explanation of policy and Department of Education.'

Learning about the technology, how it works in a classroom setting, and even about the department's policy, was helpful, with a participant explaining they found the session ‘interactive and really adapted to the knowledge and interest of the participants.’ They identified that it was ‘great to go through the policy and have an opportunity to unpack what it means for schools.’

The program helps teachers to learn how to use the tool effectively in the classroom and the safety and privacy implications when using it in practice in schools.
