Our beginnings and focus

In January 2022, the Victorian Academy of Teaching and Leadership (the Academy) was launched as a new, unique concept in Australian education with clear and ambitious objectives.

The Academy offers an Australian-first program of advanced professional learning for:

  • high-performing teachers in government, Catholic and independent schools
  • school and system leaders at various career stages (emerging, middle, aspiring, new and experienced).

The emphasis on professional learning for Victoria’s highly skilled teachers provides an unprecedented opportunity for enhancing school leadership and teaching excellence statewide, bringing benefits to every school, classroom and student.

Our programs and services draw on the world-class expertise of the former Bastow, as well as leading academics and globally recognised authorities.

Our services

We are based in two purpose-designed inner-city sites, and across seven regional sites (Bairnsdale, Ballarat, Bendigo, Geelong, Mildura, Moe and Shepparton) ensuring rural and regional teachers can access high-quality professional development regardless of their location.

Our strategy

The Academy’s vision is to be a centre for excellence in school teaching and leadership.

Our mission is to enhance and improve student outcomes across rural, regional and metropolitan schools through specialised professional learning.

Objectives

Our legislated objectives are to:

  • improve outcomes for students through the provision of specialised teaching and leadership excellence programs for exceptional teachers and school leaders
  • increase equity of access to professional learning to lift the quality of teaching across Victoria
  • raise public awareness of the capability and status of teachers and school leaders in the science and practice of teaching
  • provide a dedicated pathway for established exceptional teachers to contribute to school and system improvement
  • improve the quality of school leadership.

Evidence-informed practice

The Academy is committed to promoting evidence-informed practice. All Academy programs benefit from the Academy’s Evaluation and Evidence Centre, which connects the Academy with the latest research findings and rigorously evaluates our impact on teacher and leader quality.
