Elevating science education: empowering teachers to integrate reading skills with impact
Peta Moore’s teaching innovation project engages Science teachers at Keilor Down College in co-creating a Framework of Scientific Reading Capabilities to improve reading outcomes for students.
Can you summarise your teaching innovation project?
The aim of my innovation project is to develop a Framework of Scientific Reading Capabilities based on school-specific quantitative, qualitative data and stories-based artefacts and current research about teaching reading. The framework will be co-developed with science teachers in our school, so that they own it and understand it deeply. We will use the framework to embed reading strategies into our Science classes to improve student outcomes.
What impact do you hope to make?
Through this project, our aim is to improve the capability of Science teachers in our school to effectively teach reading within the science curriculum, boosting their knowledge, confidence and efficacy. We want to support teachers to try new teaching strategies to support students to engage with rich scientific texts and learn in a variety of ways in Science!
Can you describe the value of taking part in a fellowship?
I have learned so many important principles through this fellowship. First, I have learned to not get hung up on the end result, and that anything worth doing takes time and clear process, and the process is crucial in leading to the biggest impact. I have found being involved in the Teaching Innovation Fellowship very inspiring and energizing! It is always such as joy to learn from enthusiastic and creative teacher-leaders.
