Empowering minds and connecting disciplines: Supporting STEM learning in real-world contexts

Teaching Innovation Fellowship fellow Joshua McQuade, St Monica’s College

Joshua McQuade’s teaching innovation project empowers students to apply their learning to real-world situations through a multidisciplinary STEM course.

Can you summarise your teaching innovation project?

My teaching innovation project is developing and implementing a multidisciplinary STEM course which enables students to apply their learning from various courses to real-world situations. Additionally, I am development a professional development course for teachers to enhance STEM teaching skills and evidence-based pedagogies.

What impact do you hope to make?

Students can combine and apply concepts from any STEM key learning area to design and create solutions to problems. Teachers have the confidence to teach with ‘STEM pedagogies’, as well as the capacity to facilitate learning of at-level concepts, irrespective of the teaching methods.

Can you describe the value of taking part in a fellowship?

I have appreciated the emphasis on building and leading teams for sustainable implementation. Also the focus on evidence-based practices to support teaching and learning but also effective professional development for teachers in schools has been invaluable.
