The symposium is an important event in the Academy calendar. It's an opportunity for teacher leaders in numeracy and mathematics to collaborate, learn and stretch their thinking about how to improve student outcomes in numeracy and mathematics.
The days agenda will include support for how schools can successfully implement the VTLM 2.0 with a focus on explicit teaching.

The primary audience for this event is mathematics teachers and numeracy leaders in government primary and secondary schools. Given each school employs a different staffing structure to manage numeracy improvement depending on the school’s size, needs or resources, a numeracy leader could include:

Facilitators and Speakers

Brendan Lee
School Leader, Consultant and Host of Knowledge for Teachers PodcastBrendan Lee is a seasoned primary school leader and educational consultant dedicated to bridging the gap between educational research and classroom practice. Starting out as a high school teacher, Brendan went through the emotional rollercoaster that many teachers experience and left the profession to open a cafe!
Yet his passion for education drew him back to teaching, however, upon his return, he found that while the science of reading was well-documented, the path to effective maths instruction was less defined. Determined to address this, Brendan set out to uncover the science of maths, discovering key principles that can transform teaching practices.
Now, Brendan shares his findings to save other educators the time and effort of combing through research and travels across the country offering professional learning for teachers,
He has collaborated with organisations such as AERO, CIS, Grattan Institute and Think Forward Educators. Brendan is also on the Board for Ochre Education.

Dr Ryan Dunn
Senior Lecturer, University of MelbourneDr. Ryan Dunn is a Senior Lecturer at the University of Melbourne, specialising in teacher professional learning, educational leadership, mathematics education, and middle level leadership. With extensive international experience, he has advised and collaborated with schools and districts across Australia, the United States, Canada, and Singapore.
Dr. Dunn's research and practical work focus on improving educational outcomes through effective leadership and evidence-informed teaching strategies. He maintains a close partnership with the Victorian Department of Education, leading projects in mathematics education, middle leadership development, and networked learning initiatives.

Kendra Parker
Director, Leadership Excellence Division, Victorian Academy of Teaching and LeadershipKendra Parker brings over 25 years’ experience in school education, from classroom teacher to principal and network leader. Prior to joining the Academy, Kendra was principal of two government primary schools in South-East and North-East Victoria. She joined the Academy in November 2021, as one of the inaugural Principals in Residence. Kendra is committed to developing leaders at all levels in line with the Academy's strategic plan.
In her work at the Academy, Kendra has been instrumental in leading the development and delivery of the Academy’s Leadership Excellence Framework and associated professional learning and resources. She has also provided expertise and insights into the design, development, and provision of many Academy programs. Kendra is passionate about the purpose of education being to equip students with the knowledge, skills, and characteristics to be productive and successful.
Along with her teaching career, Kendra has worked in the disability sector and as a senior policy advisor and business analyst at Queensland Rail. She holds degrees in teaching, special education, and public policy. As a life-long learner, Kendra leads the Leadership Excellence Division with passion and commitment and a belief in the importance of leadership and professional learning.

- discover the enabling factors for the change process in implementation of VTLM 2.0
- develop an action plan to lead implementation back in your school.
