    Overview

    Support a system-wide approach to numeracy improvement. 

    The Facilitator Training: Numeracy Pedagogy and Practice program will provide you with the skills, knowledge and dispositions needed to facilitate Numeracy Pedagogy and Practice.

    Benefits for participants

    • build the capability of teachers and leaders to embed the Victorian Teaching and Learning Model (VTLM 2.0) in their wider practice
    • support a system-wide approach: build collective capacity and advance teaching practice to improve student learning outcomes across the state.

    Facilitators will have a deep understanding of effective numeracy practice and relevant department frameworks, alongside a demonstrated commitment to leading numeracy improvement in schools, networks and/or areas.


    Audience

    Designed for primary and secondary educators with experiences in leading improved numeracy practice and outcomes. 

    This includes: 

    • principals
    • assistant principals
    • leading teachers
    • learning specialists
    • Professional Learning Community leaders
    • numeracy and/or other curriculum leaders. 

    Regional improvement staff, including Education Improvement Leaders, Professional Learning Community managers, student achievement managers and members of the Department’s Intensive School Support Initiative are also encouraged to apply.


    Structure of program

    Over 8 months, you will engage and contribute to: 

    • 6 face-to-face workshop days (36 hours) 
    • self-paced learning (approximately 18 hours) 
    • delivery of one Numeracy Pedagogy and Practice intake in your local area (6 workshops)
    • optional virtual group coaching workshops (approximately 3 hours) 
    • research and evidence informed applied learning project (approximately 6 hours) 
    • one end of year symposium (approximately 6 hours) 

    Attendance requirements

    Attendance at all program workshops is expected.


    Learning outcomes

    You will gain the knowledge and understanding to: 

    • facilitate and deliver professional learning designed to improve teaching and learning to participants of Numeracy Pedagogy and Practice
    • influence teaching and learning practices at the system level using research informed, high impact numeracy approaches 
    • critically reflect on existing instructional practices for numeracy 
    • use adaptive expertise to lead complex challenges in school and educational settings 
    • support participants of Numeracy Pedagogy and Practice to design and develop instructional plans that improve teaching and enhance student learning and achievement 
    • provide ongoing feedback, assessment of understanding and skill acquisition to participants of Numeracy Pedagogy and Practice
    • promote rigorous inquiry into content, design and impact within different contexts. 

    You will: 

    • build strong connections within a network education professionals to learn, discuss and collaborate to implement numeracy improvement approaches 
    • develop your facilitation and coaching skills 
    • grow and refine your leadership skills and grow your status as an expert in your area 
    • make a system level impact to improve learning outcomes in numeracy in Victoria. 

    Fees and financial support

    Fully subsidised by the Department of Education for Victorian government school participants. 

    Government school participants can claim CRT funding for the training and delivery components of their role. Travel and accommodation subsidies are available for eligible schools.

    Application process

    Acceptance in Facilitator Training: Numeracy Pedagogy and Practice is dependent on a selection process. 

    As part of the application process, applicants will be required to obtain endorsement from their principal, manager or senior education improvement leader and provide their contact details when applying.
