Facilitator Training: Literacy Pedagogy and Practice
Support a system-wide approach to literacy improvement.
The Facilitator Training: Literacy Pedagogy and Practice program will provide participants with the skills, knowledge and dispositions needed to facilitate Literacy Pedagogy and Practice.
The program provides participants with the opportunity to deepen their knowledge of the English 2.0 curriculum (F-10) and builds the capability of teachers and leaders to embed the Victorian Teaching and Learning Model (VTLM 2.0) within their wider practice.
The program will develop participants’ knowledge and skills of:
- Victoria’s approach to the teaching of reading
- the use of Systematic Synthetic Phonics (through the Department’s Phonics Plus resources)
- structured literacy approaches
- the ‘Big 6’
- the content explicitly covered in the Literacy Pedagogy and Practice program.
Facilitators will support a system-wide approach to professional learning; building collective capacity and advancing teaching practice to improve student learning outcomes across the state. Facilitators will have a deep understanding of effective literacy practice and relevant department frameworks, alongside a demonstrated commitment to leading literacy improvement in schools, networks and/or areas.
Audience
Designed for primary and secondary educators with experiences in leading improved literacy practice and outcomes.
This includes:
- principals
- assistant principals
- leading teachers
- learning specialists
- Professional Learning Community leaders
- literacy and/or other curriculum leaders.
Regional improvement staff, including Education Improvement Leaders, Professional Learning Community managers, student achievement managers and members of the Department’s Intensive School Support Initiative are also encouraged to apply.
Facilitator
The program is delivered by Academy Principals in Residence and other Academy staff who have significant subject-specific and/or wider leadership experience.
This program builds on the success of the previous Literacy Master Trainer program and has been redesigned and developed by subject matter experts from within the Victorian Academy of Teaching and Leadership.
Structure of program
Over 2-3 months, participants will engage in and contribute to:
- synchronous learning:
- For returning facilitators 3 workshop days (approximately 18 hours), focused on content and pedagogical knowledge, and the leadership skills and dispositions required to facilitate Literacy Pedagogy and Practice
- For new facilitators, as well as the above, 2 additional workshop days (approximately 30 hours in total) focused on general facilitator training.
- self-paced learning, planning and additional forums
Facilitators are expected to deliver at least one intake of the Literacy Pedagogy and Practice program in 2025. Each intake comprises 5 workshop days.
Attendance and completion requirements
Attendance:
It is expected participants attend all workshops in the program.
Completion requirements:
- Attendance and active engagement by all participants at the workshops
- Complete all pre-workshop preparation and follow-up activities.
Fees and financial support
Fully subsidised by the Department of Education for Victorian government school participants.
Application process
Acceptance in Facilitator Training: Literacy Pedagogy and Practice is dependent on a selection process.
