About ‘The Soundtrack of Australia’

We all know Australia has sprawling and diverse landscapes and coastlines - but we rarely tune in to the sounds of the land! ‘The Soundtrack of Australia’ is an ABC Catalyst 2-part series which explores the sounds behind our amazing Australian landscapes. Hosted by Dr Ann Jones, these episodes explore the landscape for some of the most recognisable and less known soundscapes.

About the ‘The Soundtrack of Australia’ classroom resource

2023 Teaching Excellence Program Master Teachers Anam Javed and Lorena Pellone-Gismondi collaborated with the ABC  Catalyst program and ABC Education to create an immersive classroom resource that can accompany the televised series.

Many species depend on sounds to communicate and survive. Scientists are studying these sounds to help them understand environmental changes and conserve species.  Sounds can be captured and visualised in many ways. For example, First Nations people have been using songlines for over 65,000 years to remember important events for cultural transmission.

This episode series explores what sound energy is, how it is produced and how it can be measured.
