Academy up front in discussing education’s future on Q+A

Victorian Academy of Teaching and Leadership represented on ABC program Q + A

Victorian Academy of Teaching and Leadership master teacher joins special education edition of popular ABC TV show, airing 8pm 20 July 2023.

Recently, the Victorian Academy of Teaching and Leadership (the Academy) partnered with ABC Education to film ABC Education Special: Q+A, which will air on Thursday 20 July 2023 at 8pm.

The Academy has been working with ABC Education to increase the visibility of the profession and raise the status of teaching and school leadership. This special edition of Q+A was created to highlight the considerable challenges facing the sector, the impactful work the profession is doing to improve outcomes for our students, and how we can all continue to work to improve education and our support for the profession.

Anam Javed, master teacher in residence for technologies at the Academy, joined panellists from a range of backgrounds and renowned Australian journalist and broadcaster Geraldine Doogue to discuss key issues such as:

  • teacher retention
  • leadership
  • initial teacher training
  • raising the profile of the profession.

The discussion was filmed in front of a live audience of mostly practising teachers from all school levels and sectors — primary, secondary, government, Catholic and independent — who also had the chance to take part and ask questions.

Educators from across Australia are invited to watch this discussion and continue the conversation by sharing their comments in the comment section.

Dr Marcia Devlin AM, who joined colleagues from across the education sector at the live recording of the show, said Anam “did a wonderful job representing the Academy”.

“This was an insightful and thought-provoking discussion to be a part of and I encourage everyone to watch it,” Marcia said.

“By connecting and sharing our experiences, thoughts and ideas, we can support the teaching profession and continue to make progress in the right direction.”

The other panellists were:

  • Jasmine Miller: primary school teacher, Department for Education, South Australia, and First Nations advocacy campaigns lead, World Vision Australia
  • Anne Stout: foundation principal, Port Melbourne Secondary College
  • Tameika Grist: principal, St Mary’s College, Maryborough, Queensland
  • Grenville Green: deputy principal (Junior School), Haileybury.

The Q+A education special is available to watch on the ABC Education website.
